La Rosaleda at the 1982 FIFA World Cup

Long before Málaga CF’s Champions League nights, La Rosaleda had already appeared on football’s global stage. The stadium hosted three group matches during the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain.

All three belonged to Group 6 and involved Scotland, New Zealand and the Soviet Union.

Scotland 5-2 New Zealand — 15 June 1982

The first World Cup match played at La Rosaleda produced seven goals. Scotland began their campaign with a 5-2 victory over New Zealand, giving the Málaga crowd an entertaining introduction to the tournament.

Soviet Union 3-0 New Zealand — 19 June 1982

Four days later, the Soviet Union defeated New Zealand 3-0. The match kept qualification alive in a group where goal difference and the final fixture would prove important.

Soviet Union 2-2 Scotland — 22 June 1982

The final La Rosaleda match ended 2-2 between the Soviet Union and Scotland. The result allowed the Soviet Union to progress ahead of Scotland on goal difference.

For Scottish supporters, it remains a painful piece of World Cup history. For Málaga, it completed a rare sequence of three international tournament fixtures at the city’s club stadium.

What changed at the stadium?

Hosting a World Cup placed La Rosaleda within a national network of Spanish venues prepared for the tournament. The event increased the stadium’s international profile and added another layer to a ground already central to Málaga’s sporting identity.

The stadium has since hosted Spain internationals, European club football and major cultural events, but the 1982 matches remain its only men’s World Cup fixtures.

La Rosaleda has undergone significant redevelopment since the tournament, particularly in the early 2000s. The modern stadium is not a frozen 1982 venue, but it remains on the same site and retains its close relationship with the city and the Martiricos area.

Scottish visitors are often surprised to discover that their national team played a World Cup match in Málaga. New Zealand and former Soviet football history are also permanently linked to the stadium.
