The Trofeo Costa del Sol: Málaga’s historic summer tournament

The Trofeo Costa del Sol is one of Málaga football’s great traditions — a summer competition that brought famous clubs and players to the city long before global pre-season tours became routine.

The tournament began in 1961. Athletic Club won the first edition, while CD Málaga claimed its first title in 1963 by beating Real Madrid 3-1.

Why was the tournament important?

For Málaga, the trophy was more than a friendly. It allowed local supporters to see international opponents and famous players at La Rosaleda while placing the city within Europe’s summer football calendar.

The Costa del Sol was already developing as an international tourist destination. The tournament matched that identity: local pride combined with visiting teams from Spain, England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil and elsewhere.

Famous clubs and players

The roll call associated with the tournament is remarkable. Competing clubs have included Tottenham Hotspur, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Peñarol, River Plate, Red Star Belgrade, Fiorentina, Benfica and Athletic Club.

Stars linked to its history include Pelé, Eusébio, Johan Cruyff, Alfredo Di Stéfano and Sándor Kocsis. For local supporters, the idea that such names appeared in a Málaga summer tournament is part of its lasting appeal.

Málaga’s successes

Under the historic CD Málaga identity, the club won editions in 1963, 1971 and 1974. Málaga CF later added a series of victories after the tournament’s revival, including titles in 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2023.

The competition was not held continuously. It disappeared for two decades between 1984 and 2003 before returning in 2004.

A trophy with real presence

The cup itself is enormous and visually distinctive. Its scale reflects an era when invitational tournaments were designed to feel prestigious and ceremonial rather than like anonymous training matches.

The matchday programme describes a trophy weighing around 15 kilograms and standing over half a metre tall — difficult to confuse with a minor souvenir.

The anthem connection

The Trofeo Costa del Sol also holds an important place in supporter culture because “Málaga, La Bombonera” was introduced during the 1973 edition. The tournament therefore helped produce not only memorable opposition but one of the rituals still heard before every home match.

Modern football calendars leave less room for traditional summer tournaments, but the Trofeo Costa del Sol connects several versions of Málaga’s identity:
