The greatest matches in Málaga CF history

From historic promotions and wins over Real Madrid and Barcelona to Dortmund heartbreak and the 2024 Nàstic comeback.

Published 19 July 2026

Málaga’s history is full of dramatic promotions, giant-killing victories and painful near misses. Selecting the greatest matches depends on whether you value trophies, emotion, quality or long-term importance.

These fixtures form a useful timeline from CD Málaga’s first promotion to Málaga CF’s modern European peak and one of Spanish football’s wildest promotion endings.

Club Ferrol 1-5 CD Málaga — 17 April 1949

This victory secured the club’s first promotion to the top division. Its importance is foundational: Málaga became a top-flight football city, and the achievement shaped the identity that followed.

CD Málaga 6-0 Real Madrid — 15 March 1953

A six-goal victory over Real Madrid remains one of La Rosaleda’s most mythical results. It demonstrated that Málaga could overwhelm one of world football’s great institutions on their own ground.

CD Málaga 6-2 Real Madrid — 11 September 1983

Thirty years after the 6-0, Málaga again scored six against Madrid. The repetition across generations is part of what makes the fixture so extraordinary.

Málaga CF 3-2 Albacete — 30 May 1999

The modern Málaga CF returned to the top division with a chaotic, emotional win. The pitch invasion and celebrations represented the rebirth of elite football in the city under the current club identity.

Málaga 1-1 Villarreal — 27 August 2002

A draw may look unremarkable, but it completed a 2-1 aggregate victory in the Intertoto Cup final. It remains Málaga CF’s only official trophy and opened the door to European competition.

Málaga 5-1 Barcelona — 3 December 2003

Salva Ballesta scored a hat-trick as Málaga dismantled Barcelona under the lights. It remains one of the club’s most famous modern league wins.

Málaga 2-1 Tenerife — 15 June 2008

Antonio Hidalgo scored twice to seal promotion to La Liga. La Rosaleda erupted at full-time in a celebration of a team built with limited resources and enormous collective belief.

Málaga 1-1 Real Madrid — 16 May 2010

This draw secured survival by a single point. Its importance became even greater weeks later when the club’s ownership changed and a new era began.

Málaga 1-0 Sporting Gijón — 13 May 2012

Salomón Rondón’s goal secured fourth place and Málaga’s first qualification for the Champions League. It remains the club’s highest league finish.

Málaga 3-2 Real Madrid — 22 December 2012

Málaga’s first modern-club win over Real Madrid came during the peak European season. Isco helped decide a night when José Mourinho left Iker Casillas on the bench.

Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Málaga — 9 April 2013

Málaga were seconds from a Champions League semi-final before two late goals reversed the tie. The officiating controversy and emotional shock made it both the high point and heartbreak of the Al Thani era.

Nàstic 2-2 Málaga — 22 June 2024

Málaga were 2-0 down in extra time and reduced to ten men in the promotion play-off final. Dioni scored in the 108th minute before academy player Antoñito Cordero equalised in the 122nd. The result returned Málaga to the second tier in almost impossible fashion.

Which match is the greatest?

The answer reveals what you value. The 1949 promotion created the top-flight story. The 1953 Madrid win is the greatest shock. The 2012 qualification represents the highest league achievement. Dortmund is the global high-water mark. Tarragona in 2024 may be the purest expression of Puro Malaguismo.
