International stars who played for Málaga CF

From Demichelis and Santa Cruz to Ochoa, Amrabat, Rondón and Mathijsen: discover the international footballers who represented Málaga.

Gepubliceerd op 19 juli 2026

Málaga’s location has always been international, and its football club reflects that character. Players from across Europe, Africa and the Americas have represented the blue and white shirt, particularly during the modern Málaga CF era.

The most famous period was the early 2010s, when a Champions League-level squad brought established internationals to La Rosaleda. But the club’s international history reaches much further.

Argentina

Martín Demichelis was a leader of Manuel Pellegrini’s defence and one of the most experienced internationals in the Champions League team. Javier Saviola also added elite attacking pedigree, while earlier eras included players such as Gabriel Schürrer.

Venezuela

Salomón Rondón became a powerful and prolific striker at Málaga before major moves elsewhere in Europe. Juanpi Añor and Roberto Rosales later continued the Venezuelan connection.

Paraguay

Roque Santa Cruz combined international status with a strong emotional bond to Málaga. He played in the Champions League era and later returned, making him one of the best-known foreign players in the club’s modern history.

Portugal

Duda is arguably Málaga’s most important Portuguese player, serving the club across multiple eras. Eliseu, Antunes, Litos and Edinho also represented Portugal and Málaga.

Morocco

Nordin Amrabat became a crowd favourite through his direct running and personality. Youssef En-Nesyri developed at Málaga before becoming an established Morocco international and a major La Liga striker. Abdallah Ben Barek belongs to an earlier generation and remains a hugely significant figure in club history.

The Netherlands

Joris Mathijsen arrived as an experienced Netherlands international and added authority to the defence during Málaga’s rise into European competition. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s single season brought one of the most famous names ever to wear the shirt.

Mexico and Cameroon

Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa joined Málaga with a major global reputation, even if his club appearances were limited. Carlos Kameni, an established Cameroon international, became a far more regular figure in goal. Fabrice Olinga also made history as a very young goalscorer.

Uruguay and Panama

Darío Silva remains one of the most recognisable Uruguayan forwards associated with Málaga. Sebastián Fernández and Marcelo Romero also built strong connections. Panama supplied one of the club’s greatest strikers in Julio Dely Valdés, later followed by defender Roberto Chen.

Why Málaga attracts international players

The city is an obvious draw, but football opportunity matters more. Málaga have repeatedly offered players:

  • a route into La Liga;
  • a prominent role in a competitive team;
  • European football;
  • a chance to rebuild or accelerate a career;
  • a passionate stadium with significant support.

The result is a club history that reaches far beyond Spain.
